Shawn Mendes and his lack of Artistic Progression

Main Post:

I was driving home today and I heard Wonder come on the radio and by the last chorus I was seriously disappointed with the entire song. Don’t get me wrong he’s a great artist with an amazing voice, but it’s the fact that he uses it in a way that seems redundant.

His artistry progressed in such a minor way that the biggest artistic growth he had since 2015 was his hair growing. This isn’t a hate post but it stuns me how male artists keep getting away with a lack of artistic growth and doing the bare minimum within their music. Wonder is so synonymous with In my blood that I can’t name one thing he improved upon musical wise. Taylor was right, and I think Shawn needs to start changing his sound, not to adapt to mainstream trends, but to prove he’s capable of long term versatility.

The only time I’ve ever seen him be versatile on album material was “Lost in Japan” since it had an R&B flavor, and after that he immediately reverted back to generic pop. Seniorita was Latin pop, yes, but in terms of his material for his albums, I once skimmed through his entire discography to test something out, and I noticed almost every one of his songs started out with a simple guitar melody, from each of his albums. I love Shawn but I want artistic progression from him, and it seems like he hasn’t grown in terms of his live performances (always guitar, no choreo, and a potential rain machine during the climax), songs (simple guitar melody to start out, and rock edge during the climax), videos (sans seniorita), and small things like fashion.

To reinforce what I said before, I love Shawn and his music but I noticed a lack of versatility and safe bets his entire career thus far, and it feels like he hasn’t taken any risks musically or artistically wise.

I’m having a hard time trying to put what I want to say into words but at the end of the day why would a white dude with a guitarTM️ incorporate choreography into his live show?

Let the boy strum and sing.

I’ve never thought “you know what would really put Bruce Springsteen over the top? Some dancing while the E Street Band sings the chorus”

Literally just as lazy as I expected from him. All these videos of artists just taking a leisurely stroll, standing around, or sitting in chairs the entire time...They can keep them.

Shawn Mendes has no sex appeal

Main Post:

Shawn Mendes has no sex appeal

First off, I like Shawn as a person so please don’t interpret this as me being out to get him. I've been indifferent toward his music. I've never listened to a whole album by him before. I’ve just heard a few of his singles on the radio and they were good enough.

Yesterday, I listened to Shawn Mendes’ album, Wonder. I listened to the first couple of songs and quickly realized something was off. Everything seemed forced. It hit me when I got to the song ”Teach Me How to Love You”. The song was clearly meant to be a sexy fun song. I physically cringed during the whole song.

For those who haven’t heard the song the premise is pretty much Shawn asking his lover to teach him how to sexually please her. There is zero passion behind the lyrics in the song. I didn't believe in what he was singing and I don't think he does either. It's like this was the 100th take and he was tired of singing and just wanted it to be done with.

There was something that just wasn’t clicking in his songs about ”making love” and being in love. It's not that I think he’s gay (because I don't think he is); I just can’t envision having sex with anyone, really. Man or woman.

It's sad because he is clearly a handsome man but he has the sexual energy of a wet plank. I hope he finds a niche in music in which he’s not excepted to be “sexy”. He seems to be a caring human being so maybe he’ll find more passion in singing about saving the world and social justice or songs about nature and connecting to one’s spirituality.

I hate to say it, but I think Ed Sheeran has more sex appeal than Shawn.

Is anyone else getting this vibe or am I just being weird?

Why Isn't Troye Sivan as Commercially Popular As Shawn Mendes?

Main Post:

This isn't a post that is meant to pit the two against one another as I love both their music but I'm genuinely curious. Looking at their histories, they appeal to the same crowd, they are around the same age with Troye being just 3 years older. They have collaborated with big-brand artists. Other than their record labels, it seems these two main pop guys have had a similar career.

I say Shawn is more popular objectively because all of his albums go #1, more objective music award success (Grammy, AMA, etc), which shouldn't determine someone's popularity, but it's the only objective measure I could find.

Why do you think Shawn has had such a greater mass appeal than Troye? Is it all about the hit-making music? Is it something else? Do you think Troye could hit it massively still?

My deep dive:

Troye Sivan (Australian)

-discovered on YouTube, signed to EMI, Capitol

-debut EP released 2007, TRXYE EP in 2014 [#5 on BB], Wild EP in 2015, debut album in 2015 [#7 on BB], the second album in 2018 [#4 on BB]

-other highlights: Ariana Grande feature, Taylor Swift concert-show appearance, Charli XCX "1999" feature, Boy Erased movie acting

-Most Notable Songs: Happy Little Pill, Wild, Youth, My, My, My

-20M or so Spotify monthly listeners (#151)

Shawn Mendes (Canadian)

-discovered on Vine, signed to Island, Universal

-debut EP released 2014, debut album in 2015 [#1 on BB making him one of the only people to do so before 18], the second album in 2016 [#1 on BB], the third album in 2018 [#1 on BB], the fourth album in 2020 [#1 on BB]

-other highlights: concert tours, opened for Taylor Swift on 1989 Tour North America,

-Most Notable Songs: Stitches, In My Blood, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Seniorita

-44M or so Spotify monthly listeners (#24)

edit: took 'Havana' out of Shawn Mendes's notable song LOL + added Seniorita

edit2: fixed billboard peak positions for Troye's albums

edit3: changed charli XCX feature from 1989 -> 1999

I followed Shawn Mendes since his Vine days and I think promo is everything. When he was with Magcon he had an insane audience and reach while he did those meet and greets across the USA. He used his internet star power to become a popstar. That’s why Shawn was able to debut #1 with his 1st album.

Troye did not have a reach like that and started out as a Youtuber, and that transition to music is a gamble/risky but he pulled it off.

On top of that I would also say Troye’s music isn’t that mainstream.

And you missed Shawn’s biggest hit, Treat You Better lol, or mention Lost In Japan

Can somebody explain me the hype around Shawn Mendes?

Main Post:

I just don't get it, his lyrics are shallow, the production is nothing impressive, his image is generic and seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator...oh, wait.

I agree. There are tons of guys who can do what Shawn Mendes is doing, but there can only be one star at a time. When he grows older like 5 years from now, there will be another guy to take his spot. It's called a product life cycle.

Reminds me how a few months after Lauren Jauregui came out, she said that the fans shipping her and pushing her to come out really traumatized her as a teenager and made her entire self discovery / coming out process a lot harder than it ever needed to be. People really need to shut their fuckin' mouths.
